Growing Herbs Indoors Year-Round (continued)
A sunny windowsill is really all you need to keep fresh herbs on hand all year. Basil, mint, chives, and parsley are the easiest to start with — they tolerate imperfect light and don't need huge pots.
Setup
Use pots with drainage holes, a well-draining potting mix, and a saucer underneath to catch runoff. South- or west-facing windows give the most light; if your space is dim, a small LED grow light extends your options considerably.
Care Tips
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry — herbs generally prefer slightly dry over soggy. Snip leaves regularly; frequent light harvesting actually encourages bushier growth rather than harming the plant. Rotate pots every few days so growth stays even instead of leaning toward the light.
Common Mistakes
Overwatering is the #1 killer of indoor herbs — root rot sets in fast in stagnant, wet soil. Also avoid overcrowding pots; each herb needs enough root space to actually establish.
