pH Management and Control

Keep your nutrient solution in the ideal range with our pH management range, including pH Up, calibration buffer solutions, and precision pH/EC meters from Growth Technology and Bluelab. Accurate pH control is essential for nutrient uptake — shop everything you need to measure, calibrate, and adjust your reservoir correctly.

Why pH matters more than most growers realise

Even a perfectly balanced nutrient solution becomes useless if your plant can't actually absorb the minerals in it — and pH is the single biggest factor controlling nutrient availability. Most plants absorb nutrients best within a specific pH window (typically 5.5-6.5 for hydro/coco, slightly higher for soil); outside this range, certain nutrients become "locked out" even though they're physically present in solution.

Calibrating your pH meter

A pH meter is only as accurate as its last calibration — our Growth Technology pH Buffer 4 and pH Buffer 7 solutions are fixed reference points used to calibrate your meter, ensuring your actual readings are trustworthy. Most manufacturers recommend calibrating before every use, or at minimum weekly with regular use.

Choosing between a pen and a truncheon meter

Pen-style meters (like the Bluelab pH Pen) are compact and precise for spot-checking. Truncheon meters (like the Bluelab Truncheon) are calibration-free and built for rougher handling, often preferred for quick daily checks in a busy grow room where convenience matters as much as precision.

FAQ

How often should I check my reservoir's pH?
Daily is standard practice for most hydroponic and coco growers, since pH can drift meaningfully within 24 hours, especially in smaller reservoirs.

Why does my pH keep drifting even after adjusting it?
This is often caused by your plants' own nutrient uptake changing the solution's chemistry over time, particularly during heavy feeding periods — regular monitoring and gentle re-adjustment is normal, not a sign something's wrong.

Do I need pH Up as well as pH Down?
Most growers primarily need one or the other depending on their water source — RO or soft water tends to need pH Up more often, while hard water areas typically need pH Down more.
