Why young plants need different lighting
Seedlings and fresh cuttings can't handle the intensity of a full-power HPS or high-output LED fixture — the light is simply too strong and can cause stress or stunted growth. Propagation-specific lighting delivers a gentler, typically cooler-spectrum output (often in the 6500K daylight range) that encourages strong initial root and leaf development without overwhelming a young plant's limited photosynthetic capacity.
T5 vs LED propagation lighting
T5 fluorescent tubes have long been the traditional choice for propagation, valued for their low heat output and even coverage across trays. Modern LED propagation panels (like our LUMii EnviroGro TLED range) offer similar benefits with lower running costs and longer bulb life, and several of our T5 fixtures now offer LED conversion tubes as a direct upgrade path.
How long to run propagation lighting
Most propagation lighting runs on an 18-24 hour photoperiod, since young plants in the vegetative/propagation stage don't need a dark period the way flowering plants do — though many growers still provide a short dark period to allow natural respiration cycles.
